Federal government encourages NNPC to buy local refineries, including Dangote Refinery, to ensure a more equitable distribution of ownership in the oil industry.

Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, had urged NNPC to invest in the regional refineries instead of operating those owned by the government. The Minister revealed this when he said that the government wants NNPC to buy shares in privately-owned refineries and operate the four government refineries through a different model. This is after NNPC's ownership of Dangote Refinery has been reduced to less than 20%.

Governor Fubara believes that the problems in Rivers State could potentially endanger Nigeria's stability.

Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara urged the defense and security agencies to ensure that political violence do not force the country to lose its current gains in oil production. The call came after arson attacks by political thugs on the secretariats of two local government areas. He insisted that he would crack down on the political thugs and restore peace in the state, saying increased oil production was one sure way of addressing pipeline vandalism.
